Valero halts production at Ind. ethanol plant

Valero Energy Corp. temporarily shuttered a central Indiana ethanol plant in the midst of high corn prices.

A week ago, it did the same at an ethanol plant in Nebraska (Greenwire, June 21).

Company spokesman Bill Day said current corn prices — which are increasing as a result of a drought plaguing Indiana and Illinois — make the plants unprofitable. But he said the Indiana plant’s 60 employees will be kept on, working maintenance jobs and other duties.

The plant will resume production before the fall harvest, he said
