The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday said it will take steps toward purchasing more electric vehicles than under its prior plan that drew criticisms from Democrats and lawsuits from environmentalists.

USPS will look into “accelerating the production” of the 10,000 electric vehicles included in its initial purchase order of 50,000 vans and “anticipates taking advantage of the flexibility built into the contract with Oshkosh Defense to increase the number of [electric vehicles] purchased in the initial delivery order.” The agency also previewed changes to its delivery network and routes and will issue a supplemental environmental review to study the effects of those changes on the delivery fleet.
