President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to speak to EPA about the fight over small refinery exemptions to ethanol blending mandates after Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) pressed the administration to “dispense” with the waiver requests at an event in Cedar Rapids, Pro’s Anthony Adragna reports.

Ernst pressed Trump to reject the refiners’ request for waivers to the Renewable Fuel Standard dating back nearly a decade since those exemptions from the ethanol blending requirements would hurt the state’s struggling farmers. In response, Trump vowed to take up the waivers with EPA and “speak to them myself.” POLITICO reported this week that the Trump administration is looking to avoid the contentious biofuels decisions until after the November election rather than risk infuriating either the biofuels or petroleum refining industries.
