Strong RFS ‘set’ rule key to biofuel growth, decarbonization: Officials

A strong “set” rule from EPA is critical to encourage growth in biofuel industries and decarbonization efforts in transportation fuels, a panel of industry leaders said Thursday. Speaking on a webinar hosted by industry group Fuels America, four CEOs of biofuels industry groups discussed issues they hope are addressed in EPA’s forthcoming proposal for Renewable Volume Obligation targets under the Renewable Fuel Standard, due out in November.

Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) President & CEO Geoff Cooper said the RFS is the only federal statutory program that requires fuel decarbonization. He added that the ethanol industry has made strides in decarbonization and that RFA’s members have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70% against gasoline by 2030 — a goal he said he believes can be achieved before 2030 — and an ultimate goal of 100% emissions reductions by 2050.
