The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association said Tuesday that POET – DSM Advanced Biofuels, which is building the state’s first cellulosic ethanol project, has joined the organization.

Sioux Falls-based Poet and DSM Advanced Biofuels are constructing a cellulosic facility expected to begin operating early in 2014 adjacent to Poet’s corn-fed ethanol plant in Emmetsburg. The initial capacity is expected to be 20 million gallons in the first year, growing to approximately 25 million gallons per year.

“With protecting the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) of the utmost importance, we’re happy to play a vital role in representing next generation ethanol production within the IRFA,” said Kevin Potas, business development manager with POET – DSM Advanced Biofuels Business.

Iowa is the country’s largest ethanol producer with 41 ethanol plants that produced 3.7 billion gallons during 2012.
