Omaha-based Green Plains Inc., the nation’s second-largest ethanol producer, said Chief Financial Officer Jerry Peters is retiring.

The company said Tuesday that John Neppl, most recently of Omaha grain trader Gavilon, will become the new CFO this month.

“For the past 10 years, Jerry has made great contributions to Green Plains’ growth and success,” said Todd Becker, the company’s chief executive, in a written statement. “Jerry’s financial expertise, deep knowledge of the business and strong leadership have made him a great partner to work with and a highly valued member of our team.”

During the Peters tenure at the helm of the finance department, Green Plains grew from an operator of two ethanol plants with 50 employees into knocking on the door of the Fortune 500. Green Plains now has 17 plants producing the motor fuel ethanol from corn, as well as cattle feedlots, a vinegar manufacturing unit and 1,300 employees. Revenue — $24 million in 2007 — was $3.4 billion last year.

New CFO Neppl has held senior financial management positions at ConAgra Foods, including senior financial officer of the ConAgra Trade Group and Commercial Products division as well as assistant corporate controller.
