NEW YORK – The American Petroleum Institute (API), which represents oil interests, said it has filed a motion to intervene to support the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a challenge against the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program from biofuels groups.

The group supports EPA’s authority to lower ethanol mandates due to market limitations, a spokesman for API said in an emailed statement.

A group of trade associations representing biofuels and agriculture groups earlier this month filed a petition for a U.S. court to review the EPA’s latest RFS plan, challenging the agency’s decision to set targets below a 2007 law.
