The Obama administration announced plans today for spending as much as $35 million over the next three years on the research and development of advanced biofuels and other bio-based products.

The Agriculture and Energy departments would jointly administer the program that the administration is touting as part of President Obama’s “all of the above” energy policy. The plan comes a month after the president directed agencies to purchase more bio-based products (E&ENews PM, Feb. 21).The funding — which is subject to approval by congressional appropriators — would be distributed through the Biomass Research and Development Initiative to develop biomass feedstocks, bio-based animal feeds and tools for analyzing the effects of cellulosic biofuel on the environment.
