Farmers for decades have lobbied for massive upgrades to roads and waterways to help carry their goods to market. But now that an infrastructure overhaul is being promoted nationwide by the Biden administration, the agriculture industry has gone strangely quiet. Fear of higher taxes and climate policies are contributing to agriculture’s muted response to President Joe Biden’s $2-trillion-plus infrastructure blueprint. Some chalk it up to the political leanings of the traditionally conservative farm sector. Whatever the reason, the industry has yet to throw its full weight behind the effort — leaving Biden without a powerful ally that could help him keep key rural Democrats in line and even persuade a few farm-state Republicans to get on board.
