Democratic senators slam Obama admin over delayed RFS rules

A coalition of Democratic senators yesterday slammed the Obama administration over delays in setting annual targets for biofuels through the renewable fuel standard program. The group, led by Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), said that the delays in setting the targets were causing uncertainty that was particularly hurting the biodiesel industry. U.S. EPA has not yet set any renewable fuel mandates for 2014 and beyond. [ read more … ]

Producers fight back against oil groups on RFS

Biofuel producers today pushed back against oil trade groups that are calling on U.S. EPA to recognize the “blend wall” in its forthcoming proposal setting long-delayed renewable fuel requirements. In a letter last week, the American Petroleum Institute and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers asked EPA to hold strong to the approach the agency took in its controversial proposal in late 2013 to roll back renewable fuel requirements for refiners. Today, three biofuel companies and seven trade groups representing producers told EPA that the approach recommended by the oil groups would run contrary to law and stifle the domestic biofuels industry. Carson in Iowa: Use oil subsidies for ethanol

Newly minted Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson told an Iowa audience on Tuesday that he would use the savings from ending oil industry subsidies to pay for new ethanol blending stations. Carson, in his first speech in the state as a candidate, was asked by a voter about the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the federal mandate that fuel refiners blend a certain volume of ethanol and biodiesel into their gasoline and diesel supplies.
