Oil execs call on White House to stick to plans to roll back RFS

Executives from nearly three dozen oil companies today called on President Obama to hold firm on a proposed rule that would roll back the nation’s biofuel blending targets. U.S. EPA last November proposed a 16 percent decrease in the mandate for total renewable fuel — which includes both conventional ethanol and advanced biofuels — compared with the level Congress anticipated when it passed the 2007 renewable fuel standard that became law. Refiners are warning President Barack Obama not to back away from efforts to scale back the Renewable Fuel Standard requirements for blending ethanol into the nation’s gasoline supply. In a letter to the president today, 31 refining industry executives said that continuing along the RFS’s “statutory trajectory” could boost gasoline prices 26 cents a gallon by 2017. [ read more … ]

Italy pushes ahead with ‘next generation’ biofuels from waste

Italy will become the first country in Europe to legally require “advanced biofuels” in cars and trucks, the BBC has learned. Made from waste, the new fuels are said to reduce the amount of land taken out of food production. The world’s first commercial scale plant making fuel from straw opened in Italy last year.
