Obama’s Delay on Renewable Fuel Puts Producers in Bind

It’s the kind of climate-friendly project supporters have pined for since Congress in 2005 ordered refiners to use more renewable fuel. Even so, Brummels’ company — Canergy LLC — is being stymied by an unlikely culprit: the Obama administration. The Environmental Protection Agency is eight months past the deadline for issuing its mandate of how much ethanol, biodiesel and other petroleum alternatives must be blended into motor fuels this year, leaving investors wary about the government’s commitment to the program. At the same time, cuts EPA proposed last year, and a surprise regulatory rewrite last month, may undercut demand for Canergy’s ethanol. [ read more … ]

Funding for emissions reduction projects could get boost under proposed rule

The Federal Highway Administration is seeking public feedback on its proposed handling of a congressionally required change aimed at steering more money into projects to cut fine particulate air emissions. The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program is now supposed to give funding priority to areas designated as being in “nonattainment” for maintenance of air quality standards for such particulate matter, often referred to as PM2.5, according to MAP-21, the highway and transit funding law enacted two years ago. EPA releases June RIN data

The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) data for June, reporting that more than 1.46 billion RINs were generated during the month across all biofuel categories.
For the second consecutive month of 2014, no cellulosic RINs were generated. Overall, 72,754 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs have been generated so far this year, with 28,586 D3 RINs generated for cellulosic ethanol and 44,168 generated for renewable gasoline. All D3 RINs generated this year were generated by domestic producers. [ read more … ]

Valero buying corn to restart Indiana ethanol plant -trade

Valero Energy Corp is buying corn ahead of the expected startup within the next month of the company’s 110-million-gallon a year ethanol plant in Mount Vernon, Indiana, U.S. cash grains sources said on Friday. The plant is the largest corn-based ethanol plant not currently operating in the U.S. and will add capacity to an industry that produced a record amount of the biofuel earlier this summer.

Nebraska adds another ethanol blend retailer

The move to convert stations in Fort Dodge, Mason City, Clinton and Davenport, along with the previously converted Indianola location, won praise from the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA).
