EPA Administrator Explains RFS Final Rule Delay

McCarthy had previously stated she expected the rule to come out in June – but she says it has become clear in comments EPA has received that there are some general concerns about the volumes and how EPA is adjusting them – and whether they will continue to push the joint interest in getting biofuels into the system. U.S. EPA approves new fuels for federal biofuel mandate

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday expanded the types of fuel that can be used to satisfy the federal biofuel mandate, a move that could play a role in the agency’s delayed targets for 2014 renewable fuel use. The EPA finalized a plan allowing compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas produced using biogas from landfills, manure digesters and sewage treatment plants to qualify as cellulosic biofuel, fuel typically derived from sources like grasses and wood. In new twist, RFS could boost electric vehicles

The federal policy used to build up the nation’s ethanol and advanced biofuel capacity could soon be harnessed to spur the development of electric vehicle infrastructure. In a final rule issued last week, U.S. EPA said it would allow renewable electricity made from certain biomass sources to qualify under the renewable fuel standard if it is used to power electric vehicles. Under the rule, entities would be allowed to generate credits for that electricity and make money selling them to refiners that must meet annual renewable fuel targets. [ read more … ]
