120 companies urge Obama to increase biodiesel target

Nearly 120 biodiesel companies today expressed “alarm” over a proposed renewable fuel rule that is set to be finalized soon by the Obama administration. In a letter to President Obama, the companies said U.S. EPA’s proposed rule would hamstring their production because it would require that less biodiesel be blended into petroleum-based diesel this year than was actually produced by the industry in 2013. The proposal, which industry observers say EPA is likely to maintain in its final rule, sends a signal that the administration “has thrown in the towel” on the advanced biofuel. [ read more … ]

EU backs deal to limit use of food-based biofuels

EU diplomats on Wednesday agreed to limit production of biofuels made from food crops in response to widespread criticism that they stoke inflation and do more environmental harm than good. The compromise, agreed by diplomats in a closed-door meeting, follows on from a stalemate late last year when governments failed to agree on a proposed 5 percent cap, which amounted to a policy U-turn. Diplomats said Wednesday’s compromise would set a 7 percent limit on the use of food-based biofuels in transport fuel, compared with an overall target to get 10 percent of such fuel from renewable sources by 2020.

N.M. plant catches fire, leading to evacuations

New Mexico authorities briefly evacuated 350 homes after a biofuel facility caught fire yesterday. The Rio Valley Biofuels plant near Anthony, N.M., reported a series of small explosions shortly after 9 a.m., Doña Ana County spokesman Jess Williams said. County officials declared a hazardous materials emergency, and firefighters extinguished the blaze about 2 ½ hours later. [ read more … ]
