Senate Dems stay up all night to talk warming — but moderates are notably absent

Thirty members of the Senate Democratic caucus sacrificed sleep last night to make the case to supporters outside the Beltway that momentum is building again for climate change legislation — if only they will help stoke it. Senators took turns throughout the evening and into this morning addressing an often-empty Senate chamber on the cost of man-made warming to their home states, the state of the science, and the ability of the American economy to decarbonize without fulfilling opponents’ predictions that it will shed jobs. Ethanol exports up to 1 billion gallons expected for 2014

Ethanol exports are a bright spot for producers in a year of uncertainty due to the U.S. EPA’s proposed 2014 renewable volume obligations. “Continued strength in foreign demand could lead to ethanol exports in the range of 600 million to 1 billion gallons,” USDA senior economist Seth Meyer and University of Illinois economist Nick Paulson wrote in their March 7 FarmDocDaily post, “Export Markets for US Ethanol.” [ read more … ]

Biofuels startup aims to revolutionize industry with Louisiana production plants

The Alexandria plant will start out producing only up to 10 million gallons per year and tap the ample supply of pine wood chips generated by central Louisiana’s lumber industry for feedstock. Janzen said biofuel may not be the only money-maker for the company. Its production process produces a type of waste known as “biochar” — essentially the carbonized skeleton of the wood chips, grass and other material heated up during the fuel production process.
