Lawmakers Pump EPA for Lower Ethanol Mandate

The battle over ethanol continues to rage as the Environmental Protection Agency prepares to release the 2014 renewable-fuel standard, a mandate determining the amount of biofuel refiners will be required to blend with gasoline next year. Both supporters and opponents of the biofuels mandate have been making their cases before the public and the administration for months. I’ve long admired and relied on the work of the ag economists at Farmdoc Daily, particularly Scott Irwin and Darrel Goode. They’ve done a lot of insightful analysis on the agricultural market impact of biofuel mandates under the Renewable Fuel Standard — analysis that I rely on to make the case for a flexible, cautious approach to implementing the standard to ensure our clean fuel goals don’t come into conflict with food security and climate protection. Lincoln drivers give ethanol less than full embrace

The retail fuel picture was thrown into a state of flux in Lincoln and across Nebraska in late August. That’s when pipeline suppliers let it be known that they would close the loop on practices already in place across the rest of the United States and quit delivering 87 octane fuel to the local sector. For those who still wanted gasoline without ethanol in it, that meant that they would get a 50-50 combination of 82-83 octane and more expensive premium grade fuel. Todd Sneller of the Nebraska Ethanol Board predicted Friday that the market would swing more in ethanol’s direction as time goes on. [ read more … ]
