Lawmakers push EPA to lower country’s ethanol mandate

A bipartisan coalition of 169 lawmakers pleaded with the Environmental Protection Agency Thursday to lower the country’s ethanol mandate. In a four-paragraph letter, the lawmakers mostly from outside of corn and ethanol-producing areas, said the Renewable Fuel Standard — a law that requires refiners to buy alternative fuels made from corn, soybeans and other products to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign energy – has lead to volatile corn prices and prompted farmers to grow crops on millions of acres of sensitive wetlands and grasslands. Schwarzenegger urges parties to collaborate on climate change

Former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger urged Congress to work together toward solutions to curb climate change at an event to honor his leadership on the issue. Schwarzenegger, a Republican, told ClimateWire that he kept partisan politics separate from his work to lower greenhouse gas emissions. “I would never, ever make politics an issue when talking about environmental issues,” he said. “I hope that the United States, that the Republicans and Democrats would get together and come up with a really sound energy and environmental policy for the future.” [ read more … ]
