AAA: New fuel regulations could increase gas prices at pump

New fuel regulations could drive up gas prices if they require car owners to use a “potentially damaging” type of gasoline that could hurt cars’ engines, according to AAA. The automobile club said in a statement on Monday that the Environmental Protection Agency could cause gas prices to surge if it requires fuel refiners to blend a high percentage of ethanol in with conventional gas as part of the 2014 renewable fuel standard (RFS). AAA joins club calling for lower 2014 targets

The nation’s largest motor club is urging the Obama administration to consider immediately lowering corn ethanol targets for next year. In a statement today, AAA said lowering the corn ethanol requirement for next year to below 10 percent of the nation’s gasoline supply would prevent a possible spike in gas prices and alleviate concerns the motor club said it had about cars filling up with gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol, or E15. “It is just not possible to blend the amount of ethanol required by current law given recent declines in fuel consumption, and it is time for public policy to acknowledge this reality,” AAA President and CEO Bob Darbelnet said. Voters want EPA, not Congress, to set climate regs — poll

Voters in 11 swing states said they would prefer that U.S. EPA set new standards for carbon emissions rather than leaving the task to Congress, according to a survey out today. While the Hart Research Associates poll of 1,013 likely voters, commissioned by the League of Conservation Voters, found strong public support for new regulations governing greenhouse gas emissions, it also showed that those polled would prefer the rules be set by bureaucrats, and not politicians. Biodiesel production again tops 1B gallons

The biodiesel industry has produced more than 1 billion gallons for the third year in a row, according to the latest U.S. EPA production information. Biodiesel companies produced 140 million gallons of biodiesel in September, increasing the industry’s yearly total to 1.1 billion gallons, EPA reported last week through its electronic biofuel tracking system. The numbers indicate the industry will reach a record 1.7 billion gallons before the year is over, the National Biodiesel Board said. [ read more … ]
