Senators want probe into ethanol limits

Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota asked the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday to investigate possible anti-competitive practices by oil companies that might be limiting consumer access to renewable fuels. In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, the lawmakers told the Obama administration that the review was necessary to address “reports indicating that oil companies may be undermining efforts to distribute renewable fuels, including higher ethanol gasoline blends.” South Dakota, the country’s fifth-largest renewable fuels producer, generated more than 1 billion gallons of ethanol last year.

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, the Midwest lawmakers told the Obama administration the review was necessary to address “reports indicating that oil companies may be undermining efforts to distribute renewable fuels, including higher ethanol gasoline blends.” Iowa is the country’s largest ethanol producer with 41 ethanol plants that produced 3.7 billion gallons during 2012. Iowa E85 sales jump 43 percent during Q2

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association has announced that sales of E85 have soared recently for an increase of 43 percent over the first quarter of 2013. Iowans purchased more than 2.62 million gallons of E85 in the second quarter of 2013, up from the 1.83 million gallons of E85 purchased in the first quarter of 2013, according to Iowa Department of Revenue data. Event today marks reopening of Nebraska ethanol plant

Green Plains Renewable Energy plans a ribbon cutting ceremony today for the Atkinson, Neb., ethanol plant. In June, the Omaha-based ethanol producer that markets and distributes about 1 billion gallons of ethanol each year purchased the north-central Nebraska ethanol plant and a storage and loading facility about 15 miles east of the plant for $15 million in cash. The plant had been idle since June 2012. [ read more … ]
