Navy’s Use of Biofuels Could Trigger Private-Sector Adoption

The Navy’s use of advanced biofuels could help spur private-sector investment, said Dennis McGinn, President Obama’s newly confirmed assistant secretary of the Navy for energy, installations, and environment. “The private-sector benefits are the military’s ability to do some pretty good analysis, to manage risk, and to introduce innovative materials and innovative processes,” said McGinn, who was confirmed by the Senate earlier this month before the congressional recess. “It significantly lowers the barrier of entry to new industries and new technologies.” [ read more … ]

DOE awards $6 million grant for joint biomass research

Vermeer, Monsanto and Poet are among the firms, labs and consultants involved in a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce the costs of using biomass to make biofuels. “This commitment gives Vermeer the opportunity to pull product development forward,” Jay Van Roekel, Vermeer’s strategic business unit manager said in statement. “It gives focus to a developing product line, which will get the right solutions to a new market much faster,” he said [ read more … ]
