Ethanol production rebounds to highest level in 11 months

Ethanol production is at its highest level since the beginning of last summer, when drought and high corn prices began to bring ethanol plants to a halt around the country. The Energy Information Administration yesterday reported that ethanol production averaged 875,000 barrels a day, or 36.75 million gallons a day, last week. Production was up 18,000 barrels per day compared with the previous week and at its highest level since the week ending June 22, 2012. [ read more … ]

Industry complaints spur EPA to extend Tier 3 comment period

In the face of complaints from the oil industry and conservative groups, U.S. EPA said today it expects to extend the comment period by 17 days for its Tier 3 rule lowering the sulfur content of gasoline. In a decision that will not be finalized until next week, the comment period would end July 1, not June 13 as originally scheduled, the agency said. There would not be an additional public hearing. Ethanol industry may rebound this year

Until last week, only 15% of the corn crop in Iowa (the leading corn growing state in the nation) had been planted. Then came a week of good weather. Iowa farmers responded by launching an invasion of farm machinery into their fertile fields. As of Sunday, 71% of the corn crop had been planted according to The Associated Press. [ read more … ]
