EPA to reconsider 2011 cellulosic target

Amanda Peterka, E&E reporter  •    •  Posted April 5, 2013

U.S. EPA told a federal court yesterday that it will voluntarily reconsider its 2011 target for next-generation biofuels, representing another win for oil industry groups that allege the agency is mandating the use of “phantom fuels.”
In the document filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, EPA said it used “basically the same method” to determine the 2011 target for cellulosic biofuels as it did for last year’s, which the D.C. appeals court struck down in January [ read more … ]

Bioenergy research centers would each get $25M under budget proposal

Amanda Peterka, E&E reporter  •    •  Posted April 5, 2013

The Department of Energy would provide $25 million a year for the next five years to each of its three bioenergy research centers under a proposal announced today. The funding, which is subject to congressional appropriations, would go toward researching and developing next-generation fuels, DOE said in a statement. The plan would expand on research that the centers have completed in the last five years involving engineering biofuel crops, engineering microbes to produce fuels, and developing methods to grow biofuel crops on lands not used for food production.
