Iowa Republicans vote for debt ceiling deal after GOP leaders relent on ethanol cuts

Iowa’s four Republican congressional members who were holding up their leadership’s debt-ceiling bill because it stripped out biofuel tax credits agreed to vote for the legislation Wednesday afternoon after those credits were restored. US ethanol industry expands focus to lower-carbon aviation sector

At issue is a requirement in the Biden administration’s IRA package, signed into law last year, that SAF yield a 50% reduction in lifecycle emissions compared with petroleum-based jet fuel before it can qualify for a $1.25 tax credit. The ethanol industry is asking the administration to use a methodology developed by the Department of Energy called GREET that shows ethanol to have a lighter carbon footprint as an SAF feedstock than does the methodology proscribed by the IRA, which was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Nebraska lawmakers advance bill requiring gas stations sell fuel with 15% ethanol

Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill Tuesday that would require gas stations in the state to offer gasoline blended with up to 15% ethanol. Legislative Bill 562 cleared the first of three rounds in a 32-1 vote, after a total of eight hours of debate. House passes debt bill with more clean energy cuts

The four Republicans who constitute the Iowa delegation in the House released a joined statement Wednesday afternoon hailing their “major victory” for the biofuels industry “and our whole state” in shielding the ethanol subsidies from the budget knife of the debt ceiling bill. “This is something that everybody uses,” he said of ethanol, noting that the price of gasoline rises every summer without it.
