G.M. Drops Its Support for Trump Climate Rollbacks and Aligns With Biden

General Motors abandoned President Trump’s battle to nullify California’s fuel economy rules meant to curb global warming, the strongest sign yet that corporate America is moving on from Mr. Trump and adapting to an incoming Democratic administration. The company also signaled that it was ready to work with President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., who has promised swift action to reduce climate-warming emissions in the auto sector. “President-elect Biden recently said, ‘I believe that we can own the 21st century car market again by moving to electric vehicles.’ We at General Motors couldn’t agree more,” Mary Barra, the General Motors chief executive, wrote in a letter Monday to leaders of some of the nation’s largest environmental groups.

Groups Ask Court to Restore RFS Gallons

A coalition of agriculture and biofuel groups is asking a federal appeals court to order the EPA to restore 500 million gallons of ethanol to the Renewable Fuel Standard. In 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled the EPA had illegally waived the gallons from the 2016 Renewable Fuel Standard renewable volume obligations and required the agency to restore them, which the EPA has not yet done. With COVID dragging down gasoline demand, refineries look to biofuels

Refiners like Phillips 66 are turning to biofuels and the valuable government credits that come with them to prop up sagging revenues as a surge in the coronavirus cases drives renewed government restrictions and lower demand for gasoline and diesel. Since COVID-19 took hold in the spring, refining companies have announced new biofuel plants and refinery conversions at a steady pace, with close to 20 projects in the planning stages, according to analysis by S&P Global Platts. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, ethanol producers feared the worst: a world indefinitely stuck at home. As Americans hunkered down for lockdowns, gasoline demand across the country plummeted. Ethanol industry leaders issued warnings that the financial repercussions of widespread lockdowns could be significant to plants across the country. They later reported half of the nation’s facilities were forced to shut down. Most ethanol plants have since reopened, and losses so far are lower than initially feared. But the sector’s slow recovery has some questioning if it’s in the U.S. ethanol industry’s best interest to continue making as much fuel as before the pandemic. [ read more … ]

GM Stops Backing Trump Administration in Emissions Fight With California

General Motors Co. will no longer back the Trump administration in its legal battle to strip California’s authority to set its own fuel-efficiency regulations, saying GM’s goals for green cars are aligned with the state and the new Biden administration. On Monday, GM said it has withdrawn from that lawsuit and encouraged other auto makers to follow, saying it sees a route to compromise on tailpipe-emission rules. “We are confident that the Biden Administration, California, and the U.S. auto industry, which supports 10.3 million jobs, can collaboratively find the pathway that will deliver an all-electric future,” reads a letter GM released from Chief Executive Mary Barra to the environmental groups that brought the suit.
