MDA: Ethanol generates $5 billion for economy

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture says the ethanol industry generated $5 billion for the state’s economy last year. The department’s report says ethanol supported more than 12,600 jobs and added $912 million to the value of the state’s corn crop in 2011. Ethanol producers pushed to make as much of the gasoline additive as possible last year because Congress was ending a federal production tax credit. That flooded the market and lowered the demand for ethanol early this year. [ read more … ]

Study links ethanol production to global food crisis

U.S. production and support of ethanol is contributing to the global food crisis, according to a study released today by an international anti-poverty group. The report released by ActionAid and conducted with the help of Tufts University researchers found that the expansion in the U.S. ethanol industry over the past six years has cost net corn importing countries $11.6 billion. Developing countries that import most of their food have felt the greatest effects, according to the study. [ read more … ]
