Oil industry campaign warns against higher ethanol use

Oil industry lobbying shop American Petroleum Institute today announced a new ad campaign targeting the federal renewable fuel standard and U.S. EPA’s decision to expand the amount of ethanol that can be blended into gasoline. The group is launching television, radio and prints ads in several states across the country and inside the Beltway that feature a mechanic speaking about alleged pitfalls of using ethanol in cars. The mechanic warns of ethanol diverting crops from food production, lower mileage under engine blends and the possibility of car damage. [ read more … ]

Refiners and Ethanol Companies Spar Over U.S. Biofuels Mandate

The oil industry and ethanol companies are arguing about whether the U.S. should maintain consumption targets as lawmakers prepare to hold hearings on its impact on gasoline prices. Refiners are reaching a threshold for how much ethanol can be blended into gasoline and that’s leading to costlier pump prices, according to a conference call by the oil industry-funded American Petroleum Institute today. Biofuel interests contend that higher concentrations of the additive should be sold, officials from the Renewable Fuels Association, a trade group representing ethanol companies, said on a separate call. EPA set to approve barley as feedstock

U.S. EPA has found that ethanol made from barley meets greenhouse gas reduction standards for refiners under the federal biofuel mandate. When used to make ethanol at facilities powered by natural gas, barley meets the emissions requirement for conventional fuel under the RFS. And with certain processing technologies, barley-derived ethanol meets a higher emissions threshold and could count as an advanced biofuel, EPA found. [ read more … ]
