Senate Republicans are salivating over a Government Accountability Office report on Thursday that chastised EPA and the Energy Department over their handling of small refiner exemptions included the Renewable Fuel Standard. The waivers, which may be granted to smaller oil refiners who show that complying with the biofuel blending mandates causes economic hardship, have become a flashpoint in recent years, even as the wider RFS program became increasingly contentious.

Coming just days before the midterm elections, Republicans are ready to make this one of their first oversight targets if they win a majority, your host reports . “I look forward to leading efforts to ensure these recommendations are implemented properly and America’s small refineries are protected,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Committee. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), in line to chair the Energy and Natural Resources Committee if the GOP wins the Senate, similarly promised to “fight to ensure” refineries get relief from the RFS.
