Let’s Clear the Air…

Governors Tim Walz of Minnesota and Kristi Noem of South Dakota sent a letter to Trump on the need to decrease aromatics in fuel to reduce toxins in the air, reports Agwired – an important message as the EPA has undermined the biofuels industry with exemptions to the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The details: The Governors’ Biofuels Coalition letter asks Trump to enforce Section 202 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, which requires a reduction of carcinogenic aromatics in gasoline to the “greatest extent practicable.”

But: “Today, almost 30 years later, this vital element of the law has yet to be enforced in any meaningful way. Aromatics, the poisonous chemicals that oil refiners add to all gasoline, remain a significant component of the fuels we use every day,” they explain.

Biotech has a solution! “One practical and cost-effective way to reduce aromatics is to use 30 per cent ethanol blends to reduce particulate matter and black carbon emissions by 45 per cent, and hydrocarbon pollution by more than 20 percent.”

This is what we’ve been saying. “Continued growth of advanced and cellulosic biofuels will reduce harmful compounds in transportation fuel, improving air quality and human health,” we said in recent testimony on Capitol Hill. “Supporting development and deployment of these technologies enable the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector to the benefit of economy, human health, and the environment.”

And it’s why we’ll continue to fight for the RFS and ensure the U.S. biofuels industry can thrive, creating good jobs across America and helping to clean up the air.
