Levees shored up by sandbags are holding east of Kansas City as the surging Missouri River makes its way eastward. The river crested this morning in the Missouri town of Waverly at a record level. But the worst of the damage is upstream. About 20 levees have been breached in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. Three people have died from flooding, while two others were found in a flooded South Dakota river after their garbage truck crashed. Crop damage is widespread.

Water levels also are high in the Mississippi River, which was expected to flood some parks and railroad tracks as it crests today in Hannibal. The crest will move Thursday to St. Louis and Sunday to Cape Girardeau, although no major damage is expected in those communities.
