EPA facing multiple challenges over liquid fuels’ air, climate policies

Issues raised include EPA’s plans for overall biofuel production; the Biden administration’s drive for biomass-based aviation fuel; the removal of lead from aviation fuel; and a dispute over the need for reformulated gasoline (RFG) in ozone “nonattainment” areas. In one recent development, the oil sector appears to be contemplating a policy shift to favor some form of “clean fuels standard” that would lower the GHG emissions of fuels. The idea appears somewhat similar to GHG standards for fuels advocated by biofuels groups normally at odds with the oil industry about biofuel policies.
