The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) data for August, reporting more than 1.76 billion RINs were generated during the month, including nearly 15.63 million cellulosic RINs, bringing total RIN generation for the first eight months of the year to a net total of 12.58 billion RINs.

Nearly 15.63 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in August, bringing the total for the first eight months of the year to 107.91 million. More than 2.51 million D3 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 62.96 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 44.28 million for renewable liquefied natural gas. So far this year, 97.75 million D3 RINs have been generated domestically, with 12.01 million generated by importers.

No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in August. A net total of 114,835 D7 RINs were generated during the first eight months of the year, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil in March by importers.

More than 16.96 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 74.05 million. Approximately 52.57 million D5 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 15.34 million generated for naptha, 926,888 for heating oil, and 5.3 million for nonester renewable diesel. Nearly 39.75 million D5 RINs have been generated domestically, with 34.39 million generated by importers.

More than 1.33 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 10.05 billion. Most, 9.79 billion, were generated for ethanol, with 81.75 million generated for biodiesel, 187.98 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 126,227 generated for butanol. Nearly 9.79 billion RINs have been generated domestically, with 88.9 million generated by importers and 187.98 million generated by foreign entities.

Nearly 398.34 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 2.35 billion. The majority, 1.9 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 453.85 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 1.16 million generated for renewable jet fuel. Nearly 1.77 billion D4 RINs have been generated domestically, with 375.05 million generated by importers and 209.13 million generated by foreign entities.

As of the close of August, the EPA estimates nearly 12.6 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 518.6 million retired, 705.27 million locked and available and 11.37 billion unlocked and available.
