Coalition Leadership Welcome Year Round Sale of E15

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem are welcoming the Trump Administration’s recent decision to allow year-round sales of E15.

“This is great news for all of rural America and the ethanol industry,” said Governor Walz. “This decision will help the country’s agricultural sector, as well as the economy as a whole. Minnesotans are pleased that E15 will be available all year in Minnesota and throughout the nation.”

Minnesota is the nation’s fourth-largest corn producer and also ranks fourth among states in U.S. ethanol production, producing over 1.2 billion gallons of the fuel. Minnesota currently has 19 ethanol plants and is a large provider of retail E15.

“In order to stabilize the ag economy, we need to expand market access. This announcement is a step in the right direction,” said South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, vice chair of the Coalition.

“South Dakota is a national leader in ethanol production, and this move by the EPA will remove unnecessary federal regulations and present further market opportunities for producers, bringing benefits directly to our famers and local economies, easing the impact of high gas prices on our pocketbooks, and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. I’m grateful that President Trump is opening access to our homegrown fuels,” Noem said.

The new policy will allow gasoline stations to sell E15 year-round, ending the summertime ban the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency imposed in 2011 to reduce smog pollution. The widely anticipated action on E15 is a win for U.S. agriculture, which has argued the restrictions on E15 hurt growers by limiting demand for corn-based fuel, without providing tangible air quality benefits. Recent research has found little difference in smog risk between E15 and E10, a 10 percent ethanol blend that is already available year-round.

President Trump is expected to travel to Iowa on June 11 to mark the lifting of restrictions on the use of higher ethanol blends during the summer.
