Another April 2015 thread shows Hillary Clinton’s aides debating suggestions from Obama climate aide Dan Utech on how Clinton’s position on the Renewable Fuel Standard should be crafted to provide “maximum flexibility” moving forward. Several months earlier, Podesta himself questioned why the Clinton campaign was considering wading into the “rfs morass” as it prepared polling on a host of policy options. Top foreign policy aide Jake Sullivan replied the campaign was at least looking at whether Clinton “should take an unexpected position on ethanol.” In May, she ultimately published an op-ed reaffirming her support for the program but urging greater stability for it moving forward.
