Chief Industries has boosted its involvement in the ethanol industry by buying a plant in Lexington.

The Grand Island-based company said Friday that it has purchased substantially all assets of the Cornhusker Energy ethanol plant in Lexington that was owned by Cornhusker Energy Lexington LLC.

Chief said the plant will begin operating as Chief Ethanol Fuels Inc. immediately.

The Lexington plant is capable of producing 50 million gallons of fuel annually. Chief has another plant in Hastings that was the state’s first dry-mill ethanol plant. It produces 70 million gallons of ethanol annually.
