Biofuels will continue to have an important role to play in California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program for years to come, despite the state’s push to increase the use of electric vehicles (EVs), California Air Resources Board (CARB) Chair Liane Randolph said on Thursday. CARB develops scoping plans every five years to assess the state’s progress toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045, and Randolph said the agency continues to look closely at renewable fuel production and use for its 2022 Scoping Plan Update. “As we transition the [transportation] sector to zero emissions … we need both EV infrastructure and renewable fuels infrastructure to support consumer uptake in the light-duty space, and then also uptake in the heavy-duty sector.”
