Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said a group of lawmakers is planning to reintroduce the bipartisan Next Generation Fuels Act this week after if died in the previous Congress. In addition to Grassley, Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) are also cosponsors of the legislation, one of the many biofuel bills facing an uphill battle in the Senate.

The bill would essentially require higher blends of ethanol in fuel by raising minimum octane levels and requiring auto manufacturers to build cars that can run on higher ethanol blends like E20 and E30. “We know Americans will continue to rely on gasoline and the internal combustion engine for decades to come, regardless of this administration’s push for electric vehicles,” Grassley said, noting the bill would also expand markets for biofuel producers in Iowa and elsewhere.
