More needs to be done in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry if the global aviation sector hopes to meet their net zero target in 2050, said panelists at a discussion during the S&P Global Commodity Insights APPEC 2022 conference on Sept. 27.

There is no substitute for SAF in the renewable space for the next 30 years with 300 million mt of SAF needed by 2050, said Shell Aviation’s President Jan Toschka. While SAF is crucial for medium to long haul flights, decarbonization efforts in aviation is lagging behind other transportation sectors, noted Neste’s Vice President for APAC, Renewable Aviation, Sami Jauhiainen. Both panelists identified the lack of regulations as a key reason for SAF’s slow adoption. While corporate travellers are willing to decarbonize on their own, non-corporate travellers will likely need to be pushed by regulations, said Toschka.
