Confirmation of the closure of Abengoa’s Rotterdam plant reduces Europe’s domestic ethanol supply by 480,000 cu m/year on top of the 641,000 cu m/year already lost through other closures.

The continued closure of CropEnergies’ Ensus plant in Wilton, UK since January 2015 has reduce supplies in Europe by 400,000 cu m/year, on top of the confirmation by Abengoa in April of the closure of its 241,000 cu m/year capacity plant in Salamanca.

CropEnergies told Platts Monday the Ensus plant remains closed.

An Abengoa representative could not say how long either the Rotterdam or Salamanca plants would be closed.

“I don’t think the market will need a lot of product right now. We’re going into driving season so demand should pick up, but not immediately,” the source said, noting market reaction should be more measured than in previous instances of unforeseen outages.
