Two ethanol tankers were among 16 cars on a freight train that derailed yesterday in southwestern New York, forcing the evacuation of dozens of homes.

A spokesman for Norfolk Southern Railway said a train derailed along the company’s line yesterday evening in the town of Ripley, about 60 miles southwest of Buffalo.

Officials reported this morning that no one was injured and there was no fire, although two of the cars were hauling ethanol that leaked. One of the tankers has been contained, and crews are working on the second.

A derailed tanker holding propane remained intact.

More than 50 homes were evacuated, while other residents located near the site have been urged to remain inside their homes.
